I remember the summer of 2003. It was exceptionally hot, the sun never relenting, and I was thirteen. My Sister getting ready to leave for college. The days were filled with laying around at the pool and slumber parties with my girlfriends. Talk of all the cute boys in our class and what kind clothes we were going to buy for the following school year filled our early teen conversations. One July night as we lay awake in my room, Jenny, my best friend since kindergarten, suggested we sneak into my older sister Valeries room and see what kind of clothes she was hoarding. I didn't have a problem with it since Val was out with her boyfriend, trying to savor every last minute together before they left for school in the fall. Val usually had some pretty good stuff she bought with the money she earned from her part time job, slinging burgers at the local drive in. The three of us crept down the hallway of my parents house, as quiet as freight train I'm sure, with all the giggling anxiety of the
impending crime. We made to Val's room and closed the door behind us, Jenny and Kim heading straight for the closet. I decided to go for the juicy stuff and pulled a stool to the vanity so I could try on some of the adult make up my parents allowed Val to wear. That was when I spotted her bottle of Glow sitting there. With it's feminine shape, just holding made me feel a little more mature. I had never noticed it before in all of my expeditions into Val's room. It had to be new and I had to try it. I put a dab behind each ear and a little on each wrist. The smell was wonderful, like flowers and citrus and memories of my first kiss. Just as I was reminiscing that day from two months ago Val walked in. "What are you little brats doing! Get out of my room!" We all scrambled for the door shrieking, like little banshees, and scooted down the hall to try and avoid the impending wrath of Valerie the Hun. Val left for college five days later, but before she finished packing her room, she gave me that bottle of Glow, and every year for my birthday since then, ten years in a row, Val has given me a bottle of my favorite memories. |
